And according to the release notes "This firmware is not compatible with WRT54GS hardware version 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 2.1 or 3.0" So presumably this is also VxWorks and not Linux.

I had to manually restart the router because it didn't restart itself after updating, waited around 5 minutes and after restart, it booted to the newer version, did a factory reset though and its been 24hours without any issue, the issue I already discussed (not being able to connect new devices) happens after 5-10 days so that's gonna take some testing, overall a much more responsive router now.
